Since its inception in 1963, the Porsche 911 has become a revered sports coupe. Its exploits in motorsport has catapulted the 911 into a classic cult car yet its based on a very simple but utterly successful formula.
The Porsche 911 hasn't changed much through the years, evolving instead into a more fine-tuned machine with every incarnation. It has always featured a six cylinder rear mounted engine like a thorough-bred sports car should. Its special attribute throughout this time has been its handling (although there are 911 models which threatened to undo this). The Carrera, Turbo and GT versions exploit the dynamic prowess of the 911 to varying degrees. Arguably the best of the these is the Turbo version. Its not as hardcore as the GT versions and not quite as docile as the Carrera which itself is an accomplished performance car. The 911 Turbo then is a compromise between the two, offering a mixture between comfort and performance as far as is possible in a coupe of this nature. And in S form it takes this formula to more extreme levels. Just.
The Porsche 911 Turbo S is an astonishing machine. Its powered by a 3,8 litre six cylinder engine which punches out 390 kw to all four wheels for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of 3.3 seconds. It outrageously steps on the toes of the Ferrari F430 Scuderia and Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera and gets away with it!
Its not so much its straight line speed that's amazing but the way in which it delivers its power and yields to the driver's every command. The All Wheel Drive (AWD) enhances its grip and gives it sure-footed and agile handling while its 700 Nm of torque help it to accelerate insanely. Above all that however, its the way in which it remains decidedly true to its heritage without limiting its progress. Simply put, its a worthy cult car which is only going to become more legendary with time. It becomes even more appealingl when you consider that its price tag is a lot more attractive than its competitors.
